Spike Ress, born in Long Island, New York, currently resides in southern Utah surrounded by the canyon and high plateau country he loves to paint. He spent his formative years in New Mexico where the culture and landscape influenced his artistic direction. Ress’s art education began in New Mexico with commercial art. He worked in various regions of the southwest as an illustrator and designer. In 1978 he left his commercial art career to pursue fine art full-time.

Ress established a national reputation for his distinctive use of the watercolor medium. In recent years he added oils and other water media to his repertoire, gaining acclaim in those media as well.

Ress is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and Plein Air Painters of Utah. He is also a member of Oil Painters of America, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, American Watercolor Society and National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society.
