Isle janizio, Lago Patzcuaro - 12x16 oil
Many mountains and hilltops in Mexico have monuments at their peaks. The monument atop this hill is on an island in the midst of one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America. Lake Patzcuaro is located at 7000 feet in the state of Michoacán near the city of Patzcuaro. Within the lake are five islands inhabited mostly by native Tarascan villagers. I first saw this island 23 years ago on my fist visit to central Mexico. Last October, on a return visit, we found a small road that wound around the lake and out to a peninsula with this view. It’s as close as you can get to the island without taking a ferry boat right to it.
