Statement:

I knew I had to pursue fine art when I realized I couldn’t stop painting. I don’t know if I’m an artist, that’s for others to say. I do know I am a painter and I strive to be a good one.

I prefer watercolor because it is a friendly medium for the traveling artist. It’s light weight, fast drying, and lends itself to capturing direct, honest impressions. It is my hope to take the medium of watercolor well beyond its traditional limits.

Background:

Born: Long Island, New York, 1948

Although Ress was born in New York, he has spent most of his life in the southwestern U.S. In the 1970's he left his career in commercial art to pursue fine art full-time. Over the past twenty years Spike Ress has achieved a national reputation for his distinctive use of the watercolor medium. He now makes his home in southern Utah, surrounded by the canyon and high plateau country he most enjoys painting.
